Minor setback to delay return of Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos

X-rays taken earlier this week showed that the broken bone just below Peter Bourjos’ right wrist hasn’t fully healed, a minor setback that will delay the return of the Angels center fielder by another week or two.

Bourjos, hurt when he was hit by a pitch in Houston on June 29, hoped to resume full baseball activities within two or three weeks of the injury and return by the end of July, but he has only been able to throw and run; he hasn’t picked up a bat yet.

“It’s still broke -- it’s better than it was, but it’s still sore,” Bourjos said Thursday before a voluntary workout in Angel Stadium. “The doctor looked at the X-rays and didn’t see a whole lot of healing. He said to hold off on hitting.”

Bourjos, who missed six weeks of May and June because of a left hamstring strain and was hitting .326 when he suffered the wrist injury, will be reexamined Friday. If he is cleared to begin hitting next week, he could return by early August.

“He’s moving forward, but not to where he’ll be ready to play soon,” Manager Mike Scioscia said of Bourjos. “He’s still feeling it a bit.”
