Tony Clark named deputy executive director of MLB players union

Tony Clark, a longtime major league first baseman, was selected Tuesday as deputy executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Assn. The appointment puts Clark in line to succeed union chief Michael Weiner, who is fighting brain cancer, when Weiner can no longer work because of his illness.

Clark, 41, played 15 seasons in the major leagues. The San Diego State product was the second pick of the 1990 draft, just behind Chipper Jones.

Clark served as a player representative in various union matters from 1999 through the end of his career in 2009. Upon his retirement, he joined the union as director of player relations.

The MLBPA executive board approved his appointment in a 26-0 vote Tuesday, the union said in a news release. Weiner said at a news conference last week that the union was within a week or two of finalizing “a plan that will deal with having a deputy executive director that will succeed me.”

In a statement, Clark said: “I am honored by this appointment and consider it a privilege to be in a position to work more closely with Michael Weiner, I also look forward to continue working with all our members and the entire Union staff, and together we will maintain our standing as one of the best labor organizations in the country.”
