UCLA had a great 1-3 pitching punch in 2011

Rarely has one college team had two such dominant pitchers.

UCLA was a handful with Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer as starters in 2011. Cole was the first overall pick in the major league draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bauer was taken No. 3 by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Cole has progressed steadily through the Pirates’ organization, and appears on the verge of a major league debut. He has a 5-3 record with a 2.91 earned-run average at triple-A Indianapolis.

He has thrown 19 consecutive scoreless innings after holding Durham scoreless for seven innings Wednesday. The Pirates, who started Thursday 3 1/2 games behind St. Louis in the National League Central, are in need of starting pitching.

Bauer beat Cole to the majors, but his road has been rockier. He had a 1-2 record with a 6.06 ERA for Arizona in 2012.

However, the Diamondbacks reportedly tired of his unusual personality and traded him to Cleveland in December. Bauer had a 1-2 record and a 2.76 ERA with the Indians went he was sent back to triple-A Columbus, where he has given up 16 earned runs in his last 16 2/3 innings.
