Angels to be without reliever Robert Coello at least six weeks
Angel reliever Robert Coello, who went on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with shoulder inflammation, has been shut down for at least a month, Manager Mike Scioscia said Friday.
The right-hander, whose repertoire includes a mid-90s fastball and a forkball that looks more like a knuckleball, was 2-1 with an 0.68 earned-run average in his first 11 games.
But in his last two outings, against the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox, he allowed six earned runs and five hits and walked five in 1 1/3 innings.
“Robert’s going to be out probably for a minimum of four weeks and we’ll see where it is past that. He’s got a shoulder and elbow a little bit banged up,” Scioscia said.
Once Coello starts throwing again he would probably need at least two weeks to rebuild arm strength, meaning he could be out until August.
The Angels say they don’t believe Coello will need surgery.
