Ryan Moore wins playoff at PGA Tour stop in Malaysia

After waiting through thunderstorms and darkness, Ryan Moore wasted no time capturing the third PGA Tour title of his career with a playoff victory at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia.

Moore defeated Gary Woodland on the first additional hole Monday morning, sinking a 5-foot putt for birdie.

With the tour’s new wraparound schedule, and the new season beginning in fall instead of January, the points from this tournament count toward next year’s playoffs.

“To get a win this early in the season, it’s just incredible,” Moore said. “To be able to jump up, get some FedEx Cup points racked up.”

The two golfers finished tied at the end of 72 holes after the fourth round was delayed by inclement weather. Darkness forced them to wait until Monday to settle the matter. Woodland said he came back to the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club feeling rested.

“It’s easy to sleep well over here with the time difference,” he said. “I was in bed early and I got a good night’s sleep.”

But it was Moore who quickly hit a precise 8-iron to the green, setting up his winning putt.

“Playing a playoff with someone like Gary Woodland, I know I don’t want it to last very long,” he said. “I had a great opportunity there on 18 with my third shot, and it was just an absolute perfect number.”
