Usain Bolt says he’ll retire after 2016 games

Usain Bolt plans to retire after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Bolt said Wednesday he wants to win more gold in Rio, set another world record in the 200 meters next year, and perhaps win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

“So far, [it] is after the Olympics in Rio,” Bolt said of his retirement plans. “I think if I am in great shape, I’ll go there and do what I have to do. I think it will be a good time to retire on top.”

Winning three more golds in Moscow last month made him the most decorated athlete in world championship history with eight golds and two silvers. He has six gold medals from the Olympics.

“If I want to be among the greats of [Muhammad] Ali and Pele and all these guys, I have to continue dominating until I retire,” Bolt said ahead of his final race this season in the 100 in Friday’s Van Damme Memorial at Brussels.

Burton to leave Childress

Veteran NASCAR driver Jeff Burton said he won’t return to Richard Childress Racing next year to keep driving the No. 31 Chevrolet in the Sprint Cup Series.

Burton, 46, said he previously told RCR he planned to stop driving a full schedule after next year. But now the car does not have enough sponsorship for all of next season, so “we’re just accelerating [his departure] a year earlier,” said Burton, who has 21 Cup victories in his career.

NASCAR, meanwhile, levied a $2,500 fine against Kelly Heaphy and denied her access to “all NASCAR events indefinitely” for slapping driver Max Papis in the face after a NASCAR trucks race in Canada on Sunday.

Heaphy reportedly is the girlfriend of driver Mike Skeen, whose truck collided with Papis’ on the last lap of the race.

Former Lakers forward Lamar Odom has checked into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, according to People.com.

Odom, a free agent after a season with the Clippers, was arrested Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Jordan Spieth started the golf season without status on any tour. He ends it by going to the Presidents Cup.

Fred Couples used his captain’s picks on the 20-year-old Spieth and Webb Simpson to fill out the 12-man American team. Spieth is the youngest American to play in the Presidents Cup.

The Presidents Cup is Oct. 3-6 at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.

Tamarando rallied for a half-length victory in the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity for 2-year-olds on closing day of the summer meet at the seaside track.

Rafael Bejarano won his second consecutive jockeys’ title at Del Mar with 46 victories.

John Sadler earned his third trainers’ title and first in four years with 27 winners.
