Suzann Pettersen edges Lydia Ko in LPGA’s final major

Norway’s Suzann Pettersen beat teen star Lydia Ko of New Zealand by two shots to win the Evian Championship at Evian-les-Bains, France, and clinch the second major title of her career.

Pettersen calmly rolled in a putt for par to secure the victory, then leaned back and held her head in her hands, hugged her caddie and laughed as she was sprayed with champagne.

It was her first major win since the 2007 LPGA Championship.

Pettersen shot a three-under-par 68 to finish with a 10-under total of 203 after the tournament was reduced to three rounds when Thursday’s play was rained out. The 16-year-old Ko, who was trying to become the youngest major champion, finished with a 70.

This was the first year that Evian counted as the fifth and final major of the year on the women’s calendar.

Jim Furyk had to wait one more day to try to end a three-years stretch without a PGA Tour victory.

The final round of the BMW Championship was suspended Sunday because of steady rain that left too much water on Conway Farms. Furyk, who has a one-shot lead over Steve Stricker, was still about two hours away from even teeing off at Lake Forest, Ill.

Rory McIlroy found one small consolation to the end of his PGA Tour season — he was one of six players who finished. McIlroy had yet another double bogey — that’s 12 double bogeys and a triple bogey in three FedEx Cup playoff events — but holed out from 164 yards for eagle on the 12th hole and had his second straight 68.

Furyk was at 13-under 200 and in the final group with Stricker. Brandt Snedeker was two shots behind at 202, followed by Zach Johnson at 203 and Tiger Woods at 204.

Joost Luiten beat Miguel Angel Jimenez on the first playoff hole to win the KLM Open at Zandvoort, Netherlands, for his second European Tour title of the year.

Jimenez made four early birdies to take the lead, but Luiten rallied on the back nine at Kennemer Golf & Country Club, with both making par on the 18th to force the playoff. Jiminez shot a three-under 67, and Luiten had a 68. Both finished with 12-under totals of 268.

Serbia advances to Davis Cup final

Serbia reached the Davis Cup final when Janko Tipsarevic won the decisive singles match against Vasek Pospisil to clinch a 3-2 victory over Canada at Belgrade, Serbia.

Tipsarevic beat Pospisil 7-6 (3), 6-2, 7-6 (6) to send Serbia into the final against the Czech Republic, which beat Argentina at home.

By winning the doubles on Saturday, Canada had moved to within one victory of reaching its first Davis Cup final. But in the opening singles Sunday, top-ranked Novak Djokovic beat Canada’s Milos Raonic, 7-6 (1), 6-2, 6-2, to tie the series at 2-2.

Robert Hight took his second straight funny car victory to kick off the Countdown to the Championship playoffs in the NHRA Carolina Nationals at Concord, N.C.

Hight powered his Ford Mustang to a run of 4.083 seconds at 312.64 mph to race to the victory against points leader Matt Hagan in the final round.

Morgan Lucas (top fuel), Jeg Coughlin (pro stock) and Andrew Hines (pro stock motorcycle) also were winners in the first of six races in the NHRA’s playoffs.

Wise Dan successfully defended his title in the $1-million Ricoh Woodbine Mile at Toronto.

The 1-5 favorite romped to a comfortable 3 1/2-length victory — his ninth straight graded stakes win — in the six-horse field with a course-record time of 1:31.75 on the firm turf.

Wise Dan, the reigning horse of the year and Breeders’ Cup Mile champion, earned the $600,000 winner’s share and a berth in the Breeders’ Mile on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.
