Racing! Goodbye Del Mar, hello Los Alamitos

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as it’s on to Los Alamitos.

Good Magic may have won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, but the bettors say Bolt D’Oro is still the best horse. Such were the conclusions after the first round of the Kentucky Derby Futures Pool.

The morning line was set as Magic at 8-1 and Bolt at 10-1, but after four days of light betting, Bolt was down to 7-1 and Magic at 11-1. In fact, Magic was slightly lower than 12-1 McKinzie, the Bob Baffert trained colt named for his good friend and long-time Los Alamitos executive Brad McKinzie, who died earlier this year at 62.

McKinzie is currently scheduled to run in the Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity on Dec. 10. Last year’s winner was Mastery, who was spectacular until he was forced off the Derby trail by a career-ending injury.

Montauk, who has only run one race, obviously winning impressively, is at 17-1 for Todd Pletcher. Solomini, who finished second in the Juvenile for Baffert, is at 22-1.

Of course, the leader is none of the 23 horses currently listed, at 6-5.

Bolt D’Oro, trained by Mick Ruis and owned by he and his wife Wendy, was victimized in the Juvenile by a bad outside post that he could never overcome. Bolt is scheduled to come back in the San Felipe at Santa Anita in March.

Trying to pick the winner on Derby Day is difficult enough, so what does that make it six months in advance? Last year, excluding the the field not listed, Classic Empire, winner of the Juvenile, was the favorite after the first future pool at 6-1. Always Dreaming, the eventual winner, didn’t debut until the third pool and opened at 50-1.

The previous year, Nyquist was the leader after the first round at 9-1 and he went on to win the Derby.

And the year before that the first-round leader was Dortmund at 9-1. American Pharoah was the second choice at 12-1. Wonder what happened to him?

TVG pickers update

Peter Lurie was the star for TVG on Sunday while all their other prognosticators went down in flames. Lurie hit a $0.50 early pick four at Churchill Downs for $188.60 on a $27 ticket. He missed a Churchill pick three and pick five at Woodbine (did you ever wonder about TVG’s fascination of picking Woodbine?) to bring his total net win at $130.40. Still pretty good.

Simon Bray did hit a $0.50 late pick four at Del Mar for $47.95 but coupled with his early pick five lost $6.05 for the day.

Here’s how they did:

--Lurie, betting Churchill Downs and Woodbine, won $130.40.

--Bray, betting Del Mar, lost $6.05.

--Jeff Bratt, betting Woodbine, lost $18.40.

--Dawn Lupul, betting Woodbine, lost $20.

--Matt Dinnerman, betting Golden Gate, lost $21.

--Nick Hines, betting Del Mar and Golden Gate, lost $27.60.

--Scott Hazelton, betting Del Mar, lost $32.

--Kurt Hoover, betting Del Mar, lost $37.50.

--Tom Cassidy, betting Aqueduct, lost $42.

--Megan Devine, betting Woodbine, Churchill Downs, Fair Grounds and Turf Paradise, lost $87.30.

--Rich Perloff, betting Aqueduct ad Gulfstream West, lost $96.

Who goofed, I’ve got to know?

That would be me … again. On Sunday, I said that Mo Town was the son of Mo Town. Well, I either tipped the world to a great scientific discovery that horses are like amoebas and can split into two, or I meant Uncle Mo. Think of what that would do to the breeding industry if horses could multiply that way? But also think of all the great horses that would be running against each other?

All of which brings us to another question, ignoring the ages, what is the one match race you would have loved to have seen? Send your match-race-wish-list to johnacherwa@gmail.com. Put “match race” in the subject line.

Del Mar review

In Sunday’s main feature, the $300,000 Matriarch Stakes over a mile on the turf for fillies and mares, Off Limits did a last to first to win by a length. She benefited from a ground saving trip from Joel Rosario and then darted between horses in the stretch to wear down a game Hawksmoor.

Insta Erma was third and favorite Cambodia was fourth.

“She’s got that great turn of foot,” Rosario said of the Chad Brown-trained mare. “That’s what makes her so special. And she wants to win. When she sees horses in front of her, she wants to go get them. I love it here. I’ve got lots of good memories from my years here (2008 to 2011). I won a lot of good races. It’s a place where I feel comfortable.”

Off Limits paid $11.20, $5.80 and $4.80.

In the first stakes of the day, the $200,000 Seabiscuit Handicap over 1 1/16 miles on the turf, Phil D’Amato had the field sized up with two entrants with Pee Wee Reese and Hunt. PWR took the lead from the start and surrendered it in the stretch to Hunt, who held off a hard-charging He Will to win the race.

Hunt winning shouldn’t be a surprise as he also won the Eddie Read Stakes and Del Mar Handicap in the summer. PWR was third and Om was fourth.

“To me this was in his wheelhouse, anywhere from a mile to a mile and an eighth,” D’Amato said. “This is what he relishes and he also loves this turf course. I thought Flavien [Prat] gave him a great ride. That’s exactly what he wants to do, stalk and pounce, and he just barely got the job done.”

Hunt paid $8.80, $4.60 and $3.

Brown finished out the meet with his second stakes win of the day as Analyze It easily won the $100,000 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes for 2 year olds going a mile on the turf.

He bested Pubilius Syrus by 4 ¼ lengths. East Rand was third and Choo Choo finished fourth.

“I wasn’t expecting to be in front; I thought I’d sit off the speed,” said winning jockey Jose Ortiz. “But he broke so well and he was going to easy, I just let him roll along. When we went to the three-eighths pole, I knew I had it won. I still had a lot of horse under me.

Analyze It paid $3.00, $2.80 and $2.20

Peter Miller was the winner of the Fall meet’s training title with 19 wins, while Prat was the leading jockey with 18 wins.
