Racing! The answer man is in the house

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter, and let’s get right to the questions.

Last week I asked you to come up with questions that you would like answers to. They can be simple or they can be complex, although not too complex. Just things you’ve always wondered about but didn’t know the answer. So here you go.

Dan Hudock asked: Are DNA tests done on horses going through the auction to make sure the potential buyer gets what he or she thinks they bought?

For an answer we went to Terence Collier, the director of marketing and senior sales announcer, at Fasig-Tipton, a thoroughbred auction house that was formed in 1898.

“To be called a thoroughbred in North America, a horse must be registered with the US Jockey Club, after which it compulsorily carries a Certificate of Registration through all sales and racing events.

“Since 2001, before a certificate is issued every foal must be DNA-tested to assure accurate parentage. In addition, its coat color, its natural markings and hair patterns are described in detail on that certificate. Finally, a comprehensive set of photos of these unique characteristics is held on file by the Jockey Club in the event of any dispute.

“Major sales companies in North America engage professional thoroughbred identifiers to match the horse they are offering with its Jockey Club Certificate of Registration. The horse’s family on the catalog page must match its parentage on the registration certificate.

“Beginning in 2017 and compulsory for all thoroughbreds born from 2018 on, every registered thoroughbred is or will be implanted with a microchip with information that further confirms the horse in the sales ring matches the pedigree page in the catalog.”

Thanks, Terence.

John Weber asks: Are the stewards accountable to any review process related to their decision-making in awarding final decisions in photo finishes? And, if so, has one ever been reversed?

For that answer, we went to Darrel McHargue, chief steward of the California Horse Racing Board. What say you Darrel?

“The stewards are held accountable for their decisions involving the photo-finish process. As chief steward, I personally review these and other actions of the steward panels throughout the state. I meet regularly with the stewards to discuss their actions and other matters. Furthermore, the CHRB Stewards Committee convenes periodically to discuss such matters. The committee members are the CHRB chairman and vice chairman, along with the executive director.

“All California stewards attend these meetings at which selected actions by stewards’ panels are placed on the agenda for discussion. Having been a steward in California for more than 20 years before being named chief steward, I assure you that peer input at these meetings results in everyone dealing with situations in the proper manner.

“There are several CHRB rules that relate to the process and the final decision as to the order of finish. The rules dictate the process the stewards must follow before posting numbers. One of those rules states that when determining the order of finish the decision of the stewards shall be final. Therefore, to my knowledge, there never has been a reversal to any of those decisions.

“I should add that the executive director has assigned a steward to conduct research and make certain that California racing is utilizing the best photo finish technology available to our industry.”

Thanks, Darrel.

We’ve got plenty more questions on the runway, but if you’ve got one, the door is open at johnacherwa@gmail.com

Los Alamitos review

It wasn’t the race with the biggest purse, but the 5½-furlong maiden special weight fourth seemed to be the most interesting. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer picked up jockey Mike Smith to ride Mischievous Song, who went off as the near even-money favorite. She never fired and, in fact, finished a well-beaten last in the seven-horse race.

The winner was Highland Lass for John Sadler and Tyler Conner, who won the race from gate to wire by a margin of 1¾ lengths. She paid $12.00, $4.80 and $4.60.

Los Alamitos preview

The combination that brought you Bolt D’Oro, in my book the 2-year-old that should win the Eclipse Award, is sending a 2-year-old filly into Saturday’s featured $100,000 Soviet Problems Stakes. It’s the eighth race on a nine-race card, going off about 4 p.m.

One Fast Broad, for owner and trainer Mick Ruis and jockey Corey Nakatani, is the 9-5 favorite in the one mile, 10-starter race. OFB is undefeated on two starts on the dirt. She also ran two turf races. She won by six lengths in her first start on the dirt and by one length after a bad start on her second try.

Spiced Perfection, for trainer Brian Koriner and jockey Joe Talamo, is the second choice at 7-2. She is trying two turns for the first time.

The rest of the card is a tribute to 5½-furlong races, as there are six of them. As is usual, the card is mostly filled with claiming races.

Mark Ratzky’s LRC pick of the day

FIFTH RACE: No. 7 Fast Johnny Ringo (5-1)

Trainer Ron Ellis has posed for pictures with five of the last 10 first-timers he has sent out in maiden claiming company for a solid ROI and he doesn’t have to work them fast to have them ready. Talamo does the honors in a race where those that have started don’t exactly get the pulse racing.

Friday’s result: Mischievous Song never got going and finished last as the favorite in the fourth race.

Mark Ratzky worked for 22 years for the Daily Racing Form and has been the simulcast announcer/publicity at Los Alamitos for the past 19 years.

Ed Burgart’s L.A. pick of the day

SIXTH RACE: No. 1 Lothbrok (2-1)

It was my play of the night with a strong second in his debut one month ago. The horse who beat him, On The Lookout, had previously worked a solid 12.2 for 220 yards from the gate. I loved the smooth strides Lothbrok showed in his previous 220-yard 12.2 drill and the extra 30 yards help in this race.
