Hello, my name is John Cherwa, and we hope for the very best for those affected by the fire at San Luis Rey Downs.

It was a scene of horror and panic at San Luis Rey Downs on Thursday as wind-fed flames from the Lilac fire engulfed parts of the thoroughbred training center near Bonsall in San Diego County causing an unknown number of equine deaths.

There was a report of one horse rescuer who was burned over 50% of their body and was in a medically induced coma. The California Horse Racing Board estimated that 25 horses were killed in the fire.

It will be well into the day before the exact damage and number of fatalities will be known as many horses were simply let out of their stalls and allowed to run free. Some were loaded onto vans and taken to Del Mar, 35 miles away.

There were no reports of significant injuries to personnel at the track.

San Luis Rey Downs is a 500-stall training facility that became vital to the Southern California horse racing industry after Hollywood Park closed. The center is used for thoroughbreds who are taking a break from racing, and some trainers use it to board their horses and transport them to Del Mar, Santa Anita and Los Alamitos for races.

Los Alamitos canceled its eight-race Friday card to allow racetrack personnel to mourn and relocate their horses. Racing will resume Saturday.

“This is a tragic blow to the California thoroughbred racing industry and of great sorrow to everyone,” said Jack Liebau, vice president of the Los Alamitos Racing Assn.

“We express our sympathy to the owners, trainers and caretakers of the horses victimized by this tragic event. We salute those who so bravely attempted to safeguard horses at San Luis Rey Downs in face of the swiftly approaching fire as well as those who transported horses to Del Mar under hazardous conditions and those who went to Del Mar to aid the horses moved there.”

Evacuations of horses started earlier Thursday when the fire was menacing but not imminent. But strong winds brought the fire closer in catastrophic speed, and embers started to catch the roofs of the barns on fire. Barns, because of their contents, are highly combustible.

Horses are stubborn and not easily moved. Their stall is their home, and their instinct is to stay or return to it. However, as the smoke filled the air and the fire became visible, many of the animals were let out of their stalls and herded to the training track area.

Trainer Cliff Sise, a regular on the Southern California circuit, said he saw about 10 horses die, including one of his fillies.

“It was dark, everything was hot and she wouldn’t come out,” Sise told KFMB-TV in San Diego. “I opened the pen and tried to get behind her and get her out, and she wouldn’t get out. She burned to death that quick.”

Trainer Scott Hansen fears he may have lost as many of 10 of his 30 horses.

“I don’t know the extent of the damage,” Hansen told the Daily Racing Form. “I know I lost horses. I had 30 horses. My guy estimates at least eight to 10 didn’t make it. That’s a guess.

“They were dropping the webbings to get them out of there. The palm trees caught fire above the barn. All hell broke loose real quick.”

Vans were on the scene to aid in the evacuation, but the sheriff’s department closed off all traffic going in and out of the area until later in the evening.

It is estimated that about 450 horses were on the property.

Los Alamitos thoroughbred review

It was a good day to bet a long shot in Thursday’s feature at Los Alamitos, an allowance optional claimer at a mile. Mr. Opportunist was tough in the stretch getting passed and then coming back to win the $45,000-added race. Sheer Flattery was second and Image of Joplin was third. Remember Donworth? He’s been kicking around at higher levels and is now down to this class, but as the favorite, he finished fourth. Mr. Opportunist paid $49.00, $12.60 and $7.00. Craig Dollase was the winning trainer, and Edwin Maldonado had the mount.

Mark Ratzky’s LRC play of the day

Because Friday racing was canceled, there is no play of the day. However, his Thursday pick did come in. Moon Kitty, despite some wide turns, proved very much the best to win by 3 3/4 and pay $6.80 to win.

Mark Ratzky worked for 22 years for the Daily Racing Form and has been the simulcast announcer/publicity at Los Alamitos for the past 19 years.

Los Alamitos QH preview

While thoroughbred racing was called off, the quarter horse program will go on. Here’s a preview from Orlando Gutierrez.

“Some talented quarter horses will be competing in stakes races both Friday and Saturday evening. Stakes winners Tarzanito, Scholarly, and Duck Dash N Go are among the nine horses in the $25,000 A Ransom Handicap at 350 yards on Friday night. The A Ransom is one of two stakes races in the eight-race program. The card will also feature the $15,000 Way Maker Handicap, which is scheduled as the fourth race.

“Tarzanito figures to be one of the favorites in the A Ransom based on his win in the Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap on Sept. 17 and his fifth-place finish when part of a super group in the Grade 1, $956,000 Los Alamitos Super Derby on Nov. 12. Ridden by Eddie Garcia, this track’s all-time leader in quarter horse wins and stakes wins, Tarzanito was second in the Golden State Million Futurity last year.

Michael Pohl’s homebred Jess Paint Your Lips, winner of the Grade 1 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 14, will make her first start at Los Alamitos when she takes on four male rivals in the $30,000 First Down Dash Handicap on Saturday night. Jorge Torres is the jockey for trainer Juan Aleman. Jess Paint Your Lips arrived in California in early November following her 3/4 length win in the Merial Distaff.

“Mr. Pohl shipped this great mare in early November,” Aleman said. “We were hoping to get one race in her at Los Alamitos to get her used to the track and the lights before pointing her to the Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap in early January. She’s done well getting used to Los Alamitos. She’s a pretty calm mare and pretty laid back.”

Ed Burgart LA play of the day

FOURTH RACE: No. 6 Chickakid (3-1)

She was much-improved second with switch to jockey Cruz Mendez in last and draws the comfortable outside post. Filly showed determination in last runner-up try when breaking through the gate beforehand and then getting bumped hard after a sluggish start.
