SANTA CLARA, Calif. A pair of injuries on special teams opened the door a little wider for Jarryd Hayne, the former Australian rugby league star, to handle more return duties for the 49ers on Sunday.

49ers coach Jim Tomsula announced that Reggie Bush (calf strain) will not travel Pittsburgh for the Week 2 game against the Steelers. Additionally, Bruce Ellington reported to team headquarters on Friday with a sore ankle.

Ellington stretched with the team during the morning practice. But when individual drills started, the receiver/return man walked off the field to do additional stretching under the supervision of 49ers athletic trainers. The remainder of practice was closed to the media, as per team policy, and an official injury report will come later Friday.

Hayne, who made the roster despite improbable odds, fumbled his first NFL touch on a punt return Monday against the Minnesota Vikings. He also had four rushes for 13 yards as a backup running back.

Tomsula on Friday did not disclose his special-team plans, noting that the decision could hinge on Ellington’s status on game day. DeAndrew White, a rookie receiver from Alabama, is also a candidate to handle return duties on both punts and kickoffs.
