Greg Cote’s Thursday night NFL pick
REDSKINS (1-1) at GIANTS (0-2)
Line: NYG by 4.
Cote’s pick: NYG 24-17.
TV: 8:25 p.m. Thursday, CBS/NFL.
Welcome to this NFC East Cellar Division matchup, in which the loser spirals further off the realistic playoff grid and the winner gets to continue deluding itself for another week. The Giants have earned nobody’s confidence thus far but merit it here if only because they’re home and have won four in a row in this series. Tom Coughlin is 17-8 all-time against the Unmentionable Nicknames, and Eli Manning niftied a 118 passer rating (with seven TDs vs. one pick) in the Biggies’ two-game sweep last season. Also see NYG with a stout enough run defense to neutralize what has been Washers’ early-season strength. That brings us to a new definition of September anxiety in the NFL: Picking the Giants to cover.
