Johnny Manziel will miss the first four games of the NFL season this year, whether or not he signs with a team by then.

The free-agent quarterback has been suspended for those games after violating the league’s substance abuse policy, according to multiple media reports.

TMZ, which was the first to report the suspension, says the punishment will not roll over to the 2017 season.

Manziel may face further discipline from the league in regard to its personal conduct policy. The former Cleveland Browns quarterback is facing a misdemeanor assault charge in a domestic-violence case from a January incident. He is also being sued for allegedly damaging a rental house in Los Angeles.
