Alonzo Mourning joins President Obama for a round of golf

Alonzo Mourning and President Obama made for half of a foursome Saturday morning at the South Florida golf course made famous in “Caddyshack.” That’s kind of cool.

I wish I could tell you Chevy Chase and Bill Murray (or the late, great Rodney Dangerfield and Ted Knight -- now that would be newsworthy) rounded out the group at the Grande Oaks Golf Club in Fort Lauderdale.

But, alas, completing the foursome was U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, a frequent Obama golf partner, and Cyrus Walker, the cousin of senior presidential adviser Valerie Jarrett.

Still, it was probably pretty cool for the Miami Heat legend -- who is also a Democratic fundraiser -- to hang out with the leader of our country. And vice versa, since the president is known to be a big-time basketball fan.

Obama is also an avid golfer, rarely going a weekend without spending some time on the course. Saturday’s round took place the morning after three South Florida fundraisers and was played in muggy, rainy fall weather.

Mourning spent 11 of his 16 NBA seasons with the Heat, winning a championship in 2006, and is now an executive with the club. He has long staged golf events as charity fundraisers.

No word on whether a mischievous gopher caused any kind of mayhem during the get-together.
