Angels sign catcher Luis Martinez to minor league deal
The Angels, in need of organizational catching depth, have signed Luis Martinez, 28, to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Martinez spent the 2013 season with Baltimore’s triple-A team at Norfolk, Va., and its double-A team at Bowie, Md., hitting .257 with a .319 on-base percentage, .346 slugging percentage, one home run and 20 runs batted in. He is not much of an offensive threat but is considered a solid “catch-and-throw” guy.
A 12th-round pick of the San Diego Padres in 2007, Martinez has appeared in only 32 big-league games, 22 with the Padres in 2011 and 10 with the Texas Rangers in 2012. He will help fill a void left by the departure of Angels triple-A catcher Luke Carlin, who became a minor league free agent this winter.
