Angels second baseman Taylor Featherston did not have his glove restrung or its web reinforced after Sunday’s bizarre play in which Carlos Correa’s 111-mph, one-hop smash got stuck in Featherston’s glove during the fateful ninth inning of a 5-3 loss to the Houston Astros.

“It can’t get any tighter,” Featherston said, showing his Wilson A-2000 glove to reporters before Monday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. “You always monitor your glove. As an infielder, I oil it and lotion it and take care of her. I keep it pretty tight.”

With a runner on first base and two outs, and the Angels clinging to a 3-2 lead, Featherston made a spectacular diving back-hand grab of Correa’s shot, scrambled to his feet to throw to first base and … nothing happened.

“Kole was yelling, ‘Throw the ball! Throw the ball!’ ” Featherston said, referring to right fielder Kole Calhoun. “I tried and tried to get it out, and I couldn’t. That’s litterally never happened to me before.”

Correa struck the ball with so much force that it wedged itself in a gap in Featherston’s web that is about two inches long and 3/4-inch wide. A baseball is about three inches in diameter. Jed Lowrie followed Correa’s hit with a game-winning, three-run homer to right field.

“I get up and he’s out, game over,” Featherston said of the possiblity of making the throw. “That’s just unfortunate. The baseball gods were definitely on Carlos Correa’s side. I have watched it over in my head, and there’s literally nothing I think I could have done.”
