Accuser’s attorney asks for review of Jameis Winston investigation

The attorney for the woman who accused Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston of sexual assault asked Friday for Florida’s attorney general to examine the rape investigation and the Tallahassee Police Dept.

Patricia Carroll said that detectives failed to interview key witnesses and that DNA tests were unreliable and incomplete.

“The bulk of the investigation was into the rape victim,” she said. “I’m looking at an investigation of a rape victim, not a rape suspect. If victims are subjected on an ongoing basis to what this victim was there is a serious problem in the state of Florida and certainly the Tallahassee area.”

Carroll said that the lead detective got a search warrant for her client’s cellphone and social media accounts but failed to do the same for Winston and his two companions immediately after the accusations were made.

She also pointed out specific differences between documents released to the media and original documents held by the family. Among the omissions were references to a prescription for pain medication and to injuries.

“Do I believe this failure of an investigation was related to the fact he was on the football team? I do,” Carroll said.

Last week, Leon County State Atty. Willie Meggs said there was not enough evidence to win a conviction against Winston.

“The case is closed, and we continue to support Mr. Meggs as we have done throughout this process,” David Northway, a spokesman for the Tallahassee Police Department, said.
