Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy signs contract extension

Chivas USA goalkeeper and team captain Dan Kennedy signed a contract extension with the Major League Soccer club through 2016.

The deal, whose financial terms weren’t disclosed, was announced Thursday at a news conference at Home Depot Center, the home venue for both Chivas USA and its MLS rival the Galaxy.

Kennedy joined the team in 2008. Chivas USA largely has struggled in the years since then, but team officials overhauled the roster and hired a new head coach in the off-season, changes that Kennedy said appealed to him.

“I’m excited to be part of it,” said Kennedy, a 30-year-old Fullerton native. “We have a long way to go but I do feel that with all the changes that have been made, we are taking the steps in the right direction.”

Chivas USA is 3-3-2 in MLS play so far this season.

Kennedy was named to the MLS All-Star team last year, a season in which he had seven shutouts and finished second in league saves with 109.

“We are very proud to keep him as our symbol and our leader in the locker room,” said Francisco Palencia, Chivas USA’s technical director, who attended the press conference with Kennedy and team President Jose David.
