Doc Rivers doesn’t like coaching against his son

Doc Rivers coached the Clippers to a 108-95 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night.

His son, Austin, plays for the Pelicans, and when the teams play, the coach said he’s always a bit conflicted.

“Going against your own son, it’s no fun for you,” Rivers said. “When he has the ball, as a parent, you’re like, ‘Don’t get hurt, don’t make a mistake, but turn the ball over.’ It’s tough, it’s just tough. I don’t get a lot of enjoyment out of it.”

The elder Rivers may struggle a bit with the matchup, but his wife apparently is not as confused.

“She was cheering for Austin 100%,” Rivers said. “She didn’t come to the game because she didn’t want to embarrass me wearing the other team’s stuff.”

The coach and his son were supposed to go out to dinner after Wednesday’s game. The elder Rivers said he was going to spare his son any trash talk and gloating.

“We have to play them too many more times,” he said of the Pelicans. “I’m smart enough to know that.”
