On the same day the Galaxy announced the signing of Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, the club said Wednesday it would open its 2015 season March 6 against Chicago.

The Galaxy will play the Fire at the Galaxy’s home venue, StubHub Center in Carson, to start its 20th season in Major League Soccer.

Earlier in the day, the Galaxy -- fresh from winning a record fifth MLS championship -- confirmed signing Gerrard, 34, one of the leading players in the English Premier League. The midfielder will join the team in July after finishing the EPL season.

The Galaxy’s 34-game MLS season will include matches against the league’s two new expansion teams. The Galaxy will travel to face Orlando City on May 17 and play New York City FC at StubHub Center on Aug. 23.

The Galaxy will play the first of three regular-season games against the Western Conference rival San Jose Earthquakes -- a series dubbed the California Clasico -- at 50,000-seat Stanford Stadium on June 27.

A rematch of last year’s MLS Cup championship game between the Galaxy and the New England Revolution will take place May 31 when the Galaxy travels to Foxboro, Mass.

The Galaxy closes its regular season at Kansas City on Oct. 25.
