New York Knicks point guard Jason Kidd will fight a charge that he was under the influence of alcohol when he crashed his vehicle into a telephone pole over the summer.

“He is taking this very, very seriously,” attorney Edward Burke Jr. said after Kidd appeared in court at a preliminary hearing on Wednesday. “He wants to get this past him as quickly as possible. The legal process takes some time but he is ready for his season.”

Kidd was arrested about a week after signing with the Knicks when his vehicle hit a pole in Water Mill, N.Y. The misdemeanor charge carries the potential for up to a year in jail.
