Tiger Woods’ comments ‘lacked character,’ tournament marshal says

Saturday’s dispute between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia just got a little more interesting, with a marshal at the Players Championship on Monday basically calling Woods a liar.

On Saturday, Woods hit his tee shot into the trees on the par-five second hole while his playing partner, Garcia, hit his tee shot onto the fairway. As Garcia was on the backswing of his second shot, Woods pulled a fairway driver from his bag, causing the crowd to react with a gasp since it meant Woods was going to try and play a difficult second shot. Garcia says the reaction of the crowd threw off his shot, which he hit well right of the green.

Under the rules of good sportsmanship, Woods would have waited to pull his club until after Garcia had hit his ball. When asked about it afterward, Woods said, “Obviously, he doesn’t know all the facts. The marshals told me he had already hit. I pulled the club and played my shot. Then I hear his comments afterward. Not really surprising that he’s complaining about something.”

Well, the lead marshal says they never said a word to Woods.

Gary Anderson of Sports Illustrated spoke to the marshals about it.

“Nothing was said to us and we certainly said nothing to him,” John North, chief marshal for the first three holes, said. “I was disappointed to hear him make those remarks. We’re there to help the players and enhance the experience of the fans. He was saying what was good for him. It lacked character.”
