Forget football games this weekend. Go watch championship dominos near Las Vegas

Share

Tear yourself away from pro and college football this weekend and go watch professional domino players square off in Las Vegas for $50,000 in prizes.

Members of the Universal Domino League take the game very seriously, with about 350 players turning out to compete in the game played with numbered tiles.

The league’s fall classic begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and continues into Sunday afternoon in the Estancia Ballroom at Green Valley Ranch in suburban Henderson.

Admission for fans, and the curious, is free.

“Just like the NFL, NBA and NHL, it’s a professional sport. It’s the oldest game known to man,” said Harold Moret, founder of the domino league.

“It’s one of the best spectator sports on Earth because … you can learn how to play dominoes watching the game,” he said.

Big screens will be in place on which fans can watch the action. But don’t expect to see poker faces on these pros.

“A domino player is the opposite,” Moret said. “He’ll tell you what he’s about to do before he does it. He’ll tell you what tiles he has in his hand.”

Just like in other professional sports, referees wearing black-and- white striped shirts will monitor play.

“The referees make sure that the players do not cheat,” Moret said.

Players will compete in 10 head-to-head double elimination rounds. The last remaining contestant is crowned the champion.

The tournament hopes to draw enough participants to set a Guinness World Record for the most people playing in a domino tournament.
