Labor Day 2013: Art Deco Festival at the Queen Mary in Long Beach
This Labor Day weekend, visitors can cruise back in time on the Queen Mary in Long Beach as it hosts its ninth annual Art Deco Festival, in association with the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles.
The Queen Mary is considered one of the best examples of Art Deco style in the world, with the genre’s strong curves and intricate forms expressed in murals, paintings and sculptures throughout the historic ship.
The Art Deco Festival begins at noon on Friday, when aficionados can climb aboard a double-decker bus for a two-hour tour of Art Deco Long Beach.
Special events will include walking tours of the Queen Mary’s Art Deco features, as well as the Art Deco Grand Ball on Saturday evening, with 100% of the proceeds funding shipboard conservation efforts.
Other events include an Art Deco lecture series, radio shows, a vintage bazaar and a classic-car exhibition.
On Sunday afternoon, a tea dance will set toes tapping, with a traditional tea service providing refreshments. That evening, vintage film buffs will gather on the Sports Deck for martinis and a showing of “The Big Broadcast of 1936.”
