Ewan McGregor to star in ‘The Real Thing’ on Broadway

Ewan McGregor will make his Broadway debut next year in a revival production of Tom Stoppard’s “The Real Thing,” produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company in New York.

McGregor will play the role of Henry, a playwright, in Stoppard’s 1982 drama that features a play-within-a-play structure. The role of Henry was originated by Roger Rees in London and Jeremy Irons on Broadway in 1984. No other casting has been announced for the Roundabout’s production, which is set to open in New York on Oct. 30, 2014.

Sam Gold will direct “The Real Thing,” which is scheduled to run through Jan. 4, 2015, at the American Airlines Theatre.

The play, which is considered by many to be Stoppard’s best, is often revived, including a Donmar Warehouse production that came to Broadway in 2000 with Stephen Dillane as Henry and Jennifer Ehle as his lover, Annie. (The role of Annie was first played by Glenn Close on Broadway.)

McGregor played the role of Iago in a 2007 production of Shakespeare’s “Othello” at the Donmar Warehouse in London, opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor. The Scottish actor was also in a London production of the musical “Guys and Dolls” in 2005.

“The Real Thing” won several Tony Awards when it debuted in New York, including the prize for best play.

A prolific screen actor, McGregor got his break in the Danny Boyle movies “Shallow Grave” and “Trainspotting” in the ‘90s, and will be seen later this year in the big screen adaptation of the play “August: Osage County.”
