‘Jersey Boys,’ directed by Clint Eastwood, gets first trailer

“Jersey Boys,” Clint Eastwood’s big-screen adaptation of the Broadway jukebox musical, is scheduled to open June 20. On Friday, Warner Bros. released the trailer for the highly anticipated movie.

The story of Frankie Valli and his rise to success with the Four Seasons debuted at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego in 2004 before transferring to Broadway the following year, winning the Tony Award for new musical. The Des McAnuff-directed production is still running at the August Wilson Theatre in New York, having logged more than 3,400 performances.

Eastwood has cast his movie with some members of the original Broadway ensemble -- including Tony-winner John Lloyd Young in the lead role of Valli.

The setting of the story is northern New Jersey and New York during the ‘60s. But anyone who spent time in downtown Los Angeles last summer during a brutal heat wave will recall Eastwood’s production team sweating it out at locations near the city’s historic core district. (The movie also did some location shooting on the East Coast.)

The movie’s screenplay is credited to Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice (who penned the stage musical’s script), and the ubiquitous John Logan. Eastwood being Eastwood, the 83-year-old director has already moved on and is reportedly working on his next movie, which is being shot in Morocco.

“Jersey Boys” is Eastwood’s first music-themed biopic since 1988’s “Bird,” about the short life of jazz musician Charlie Parker.
