‘Days of Future Past’: Hugh Jackman could join new/old X-Men mix

Plans for “X-Men: Days of Future Past” continue to be unveiled as director Bryan Singer’s follow-up to “X-Men: First Class” takes shape. The latest news? Hugh Jackman could join the film as Wolverine.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jackman is in talks to reunite with Singer on the new film. This follows the announcement earlier this week that Patrick Stewart would be returning as Professor X and Ian McKellen would be back as Magneto. Both Stewart and McKellen sat out the previous “X-Men” installment, “First Class,” and Jackman made only a cameo appearance.

Singer returns to the franchise after other directors made “X-Men: The Last Stand” and “First Class.”

The “Days of Future Past” story line is one that’s well-known to X-Men fans. It was a two-issue story written by longtime “X-Men” writer Chris Claremont in 1981 and was partially set in an alternative future where mutants were forced into internment camps, watched over by giant robots called Sentinels.

In the present day, the X-Men must work to stop a crucial event that triggers the anti-mutant hysteria that eventually leads to the dystopic future.

In 2001, a Marvel readers poll voted it the 25th most popular Marvel story of all time.

With Stewart, McKellen and Jackman (as well as Singer) returning to the film series, many fans hope to see this was a connector between the original “X-Men” and the prequel “First Class.” Many actors from “First Class” are also returning, including Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult.

Jackman is also playing Wolverine in next summer’s “The Wolverine,” which is a sequel to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

The X-Men films, it seems, are becoming as convoluted as the original comics.
