Man convicted of Disneyland bomb threats faces sex crimes charges

A 59-year-old man serving a federal prison sentence in Arizona for making bomb threats to Disneyland faces multiple counts of sexual assault involving two Orange County women he met through Pennysaver ads in the 1980s.

James Michael Camp, 59, of Anaheim, was scheduled to be arraigned Friday on two felony counts of residential burglary, two counts of forcible rape, two counts of forcible oral copulation, one count of grand theft and one count of robbery with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a knife.

According to the Orange County district attorney’s office, the first attack occurred July 23, 1980, in Santa Ana.

Prosecutors allege Camp responded to an ad placed by a woman, whose name was not released, about an apartment for rent. Camp approached the woman from behind, choked her and pulled out a knife, they said.

Camp allegedly threatened to kill her, then forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her. Prosecutors say Camp then tied the woman with an electrical cord and raped her before burglarizing her home and fleeing. The woman was able to untie herself and called police.

The second attack occurred July 22, 1981, in Anaheim. Prosecutors accuse Camp of responding to an ad about patio furniture.

As the woman stood in the backyard, Camp allegedly went inside the house, pulled a knife from his pants and grabbed her as she walked inside to check on him.

Prosecutors say Camp pulled the woman into the master bedroom, pushed her into the bed and raped her. He stole money from her jewelry box and other valuables from her purse before fleeing, authorities say.

Both rape cases were investigated by local police, but no suspect was identified.

Authorities say Camp eventually left the state but was later arrested in another rape case in Louisiana.

His arrest linked him to the Orange County rape cases. Additionally, the U.S. Attorney’s office identified him as the man who made bomb threats to Disneyland.

Camp pleaded guilty on Feb. 2, 1983, to one felony count of aggravated rape in Louisiana and was sentenced to life in state prison.

After 30 years, he was detained by the U.S. Attorney’s office on June 6, 2011, and began serving five years in the bomb threat case.

Camp was extradited to Orange County on April 3 from federal custody in Arizona for the outstanding warrant in the 1982 sexual assault charges.
