Lady in red

The Beat Swap Meet in Chinatown's Central Plaza is a celebration of vinyl music culture, where buyers and collectors sell and trade records in a variety of styles: blues, boogie, hip-hop, Latin, new wave and punk among them.

Last September, while perusing the market, iPhone photographer George Sifuentes crossed paths with a young woman standing against a red door.

"The swap meet brought out some of L.A.'s vibrant youngsters," Sifuentes said. "Among the many was Francisca (a.k.a. Kika Vi Lana), whose classic pin-up style turned heads all day."

After the fire

Last month, a fire ravaged through an apartment development under construction in the 900 block of W. Temple Street in downtown Los Angeles, temporarily shutting down the 110 Freeway.

Escorted by the demolition team, freelance photographer Daniel Sawyer Schafer was able to capture some shots of the street's cleanup. In this photo, two firefighters pause momentarily at the end of a 12-hour shift.

Schaefer took the image with a Sony A7 and Voightlander 28mm f/3.5 lens.

An after-school special

The streets were still wet from a light drizzle when Luci Bird's daughter came home from school two months ago. "It was the first rain of the season, I believe, so I was pretty excited," the photographer said. "I love taking and exploring reflection shots, so I jumped at the chance."

Bird, who took the image in Buena Park on her Samsung Galaxy S3, says her daughter is usually willing to go along with her photo ideas.

A stitch in time saves nine ... lives?

Christopher Stoltz photographed a cat waiting by some sewing machines at a shop near the corner of South Main and West 8th streets in downtown Los Angeles. A cat casually lounging at a sewing shop made for a bizarre scene, he said.

Stoltz took this photo on Jan. 9 using a Leica M7.

Sunrise at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve

Josh Patterson went to the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve in the San Fernando Valley on Monday. North of the Burbank Boulevard overpass, he saw the sun reflected on the Los Angeles River and the mist rising. He hopped to the center of the river and shot this photo.

"What struck me was how you can stumble across these pockets of natural beauty in the heart of Los Angeles," he said. "Totally unexpected and more magical for that."

Patterson took this photo at sunrise with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II.
