Top pick Corey Seager gets $2.35 million signing bonus

The Dodgers have finalized an agreement with their first-round draft pick, infielder Corey Seager of Northwest Cabarrus High in Concord, N.C.

Seager will receive a bonus of $2.35 million, according to people familiar with the deal who spoke under the condition of anonymity because it isn’t expected to be announced until Saturday. Seager was selected with the 18th overall pick, which was designated a slot value of $1.95 million by the commissioner’s office.

The deadline to sign draft picks is July 13.

Seager, 18, is the younger brother of Seattle Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager. He was the first position player to be taken with the Dodgers’ top pick since first baseman James Loney in 2002.

Listed at 6 feet 4 and 205 pounds, Seager was projected by several other teams as a third baseman, but the Dodgers intend for him to start his professional career as a shortstop.

Seager is represented by Scott Boras, who is also the agent for 2010 Dodgers first-round pick Chris Reed, a pitcher.

Seager leveraged a scholarship to the University of South Carolina into an over-slot bonus. He underwent a physical examination Thursday to finalize the contract. He is expected to be at Dodger Stadium on Saturday.

Ellis on the mend

Second baseman Mark Ellis is expected to be activated from the disabled list for the Dodgers’ final series before the All-Star break.

Ellis, who underwent an emergency leg operation on May 19, is scheduled to begin a four-game minor league rehabilitation assignment with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Saturday.

He is scheduled to be the Quakes’ designated hitter Saturday, play the field the next three days and rest Wednesday. If he doesn’t suffer any setbacks, he will return to the Dodgers on July 5 for their series opener in Arizona.

Watching the Dodgers’ recent slide from the bench has been difficult for Ellis.

“It’s really hard,” Ellis said. “You never feel good about not playing, but when they’re playing well, the guilt isn’t there. Now you feel guilty.”

Puig deal finalized

The Dodgers officially announced the signing of Cuban outfield prospect Yasiel Puig.

Puig’s seven-year, $42-million deal includes a $12-million signing bonus and is the most lucrative ever for a Cuban amateur.

Scouting director Logan White raved about Puig’s power, saying, “He reminds me a lot of Sammy Sosa.” White also compared Puig’s physique to Matt Kemp’s.

The Dodgers aren’t counting on Puig to play in the majors this season. Suspended from Cuba’s top league for attempting to escape the Communist country, Puig hasn’t played organized baseball in more than a year.

Puig, who is living in Mexico, is expected to come to the United States in a few weeks. The Dodgers have assigned him to their rookie league team in Arizona, which plays at their spring-training facility.

Short hops

Javy Guerra, who underwent a minor knee operation June 3, will pitch for Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday. Guerra pitched to Ellis and Kemp (also on the DL) in a simulated game Thursday. He broke two of Ellis’ bats and one of Kemp’s. . . . Andre Ethier said his strained left rib-cage muscle is still sore, but he played catch and said he expects to return Sunday or Monday.
