Boys’ basketball: Which teams will make Open Division playoffs?

Share

It’s the final week of the regular season in high school basketball, which means a final opportunity to be one of the 16 teams selected for the Southern Section Open Division playoffs.

There are schools that can’t wait to be selected and schools that will offer a collective sigh of relief if they aren’t selected. There will be celebration and not celebration.

The announcement of teams selected for the Open Division will come on Friday.

Last year, I guessed wrong on several teams that ended up making the tournament.

Here’s the group I think are definite: Mater Dei, Bishop Montgomery, Sierra Canyon, Corona Centennial, Damien, Orange Lutheran, Cathedral, Long Beach Poly, Etiwanda, Redondo, Chino Hills, Cantwell-Sacred Heart, Alemany and Price.

That’s 14. The other two teams should come from Crespi, JW North, Great Oak, Maranatha, Campbell Hall, St. John Bosco and Sonora.

St. John Bosco has a chance to play itself into the Open Division with games this week against Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran.
