Kings trade for left wing Ryan Smyth

Unable to find a productive winger in the free-agent market, the Kings went the trade route Friday to acquire veteran left wing Ryan Smyth from Colorado for defensemen Kyle Quincey and Tom Preissing and a fifth-round draft pick in 2010.

Smyth, 33, had 26 goals and 59 points in 77 games with a bad team last season. He had been available for a while because of his age and his salary cap hit, $6.25 million through 2011-12. Smyth waived his no-trade clause to facilitate the deal, but it remains conditional on the players involved passing their physicals.

General Manager Dean Lombardi said he had no specific injury concerns but wants to be sure Smyth has withstood the wear and tear of 920 games. He also said Smyth, many times the captain of Team Canada in international competition, meets his “character” requirement.

“He fills the position, left wing, and the goal is to put up some numbers,” Lombardi said. “But most important, the way he plays is the way I want the Kings to play. I’m pretty happy, though I gave up a good player. Quince was a tough guy to give up.”

Quincey was a useful addition after the Kings claimed him on waivers from Detroit. Preissing played only occasionally and had vertigo for a while.

Lombardi, who signed defenseman Rob Scuderi as a free agent Thursday, said he might seek one more veteran defenseman for depth.

Ducks forward Teemu Selanne says his next NHL season will be his last. Selanne, a 10-time All-Star, told the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper in Finland that a man his age doesn’t belong in the NHL. . . . Rick Nash and the Columbus Blue Jackets have reached agreement on an eight-year contract extension through the 2017-18 season. . . . Free-agent forward Mikael Samuelsson signed a $7.5-million, three-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks after playing for Detroit the last four seasons. . . . The Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with forward Ruslan Fedotenko, who joined the team a year ago as a free agent.

Rain washes out NASCAR qualifying

Tony Stewart will start from a familiar spot tonight at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

The Sprint Cup points leader was awarded the pole for the Coke Zero 400 when rain washed out qualifying.

It was Stewart’s third pole -- all in rainouts -- in the last five races.

Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards and Denny Hamlin rounded out the first three rows.

Clint Bowyer won the Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway for his first victory of the year.

Taurasi cited for drunk driving

Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi said that she’s embarrassed after being cited for drunk driving a few hours after she helped lead her team to victory over the Seattle Storm.

An officer stopped Taurasi early Thursday for speeding, Phoenix police spokesman Luis Samudio said. The officer smelled alcohol and gave the player several field sobriety tests, according to a police statement.

Taurasi, the WNBA’s leading fan vote-getter for the July 25 All-Star game, was then driven to a mobile DUI van, where she gave a blood sample, then was cited and released. Authorities did not know her blood-alcohol content.

Former Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang, one of the most prolific passers in college football history, has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and released without charges pending further investigation. Chang, 27, was arrested at his Mililani, Hawaii, home Thursday after a woman alleged her camera was taken away from her while she was filming a brawl last month.

Fauria set for transfer to UCLA

Joseph Fauria, a sophomore tight end from Notre Dame who asked for and received his release, has decided to transfer to UCLA. The 6-foot-7, 260-pound Fauria, a former standout at Encino Crespi, said final details still need to be worked out to make it official.

Fauria will have to sit out the 2009 season and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

UCLA and Rutgers have agreed to a two-year, home-and-home football series.

The Bruins will open the 2016 season on Sept. 1 at Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights will travel to the Rose Bowl to open the 2017 season on Sept. 2.
