Jonas Hiller, Ducks defeat Canucks, 3-2

Eventually there will come a time when Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller puts on his mask and plays against a team not named the Vancouver Canucks. Someday.

For now, Hiller will have to be content to deal with all things Vancouver, facing the Canucks twice in five days. Then again, the Canucks were almost like different teams in those two games.

Team B — or B-minus — on Saturday.

What more closely resembled Team A was on exhibit in Anaheim on Wednesday night, testing the resolve and glove of Hiller. Call it a clean sweep for Hiller and the Ducks after their 3-2 win against Vancouver at Honda Center.

Hiller faced 33 shots, and the game-winner came from defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky, on the power play, at 5 minutes 8 seconds of the third period. Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler, who had a goal and an assist, summed it up best when he called Hiller the “bread and butter of our team.”

“It’s great just to feel right, to be out there,” said Hiller, who was plagued by vertigo issues the second half of last season. “I feel like I’m really sharp on the puck, especially in the third where I felt like they were just bringing everything to the net.”

Despite the added presence of Canucks luminaries, namely the Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel, Hiller didn’t have a lot of work through the first period and a half. In fact, he didn’t face shot No. 10 — making a nifty glove save on Mike Duco — until 6:06 left in the second.

This was the first exhibition game for the Sedins and Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo.

“[Hiller] has played great,” said Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf. “It’s a relief to see him rebound the way he has, and we know the unfortunate [vertigo] thing that went on for him last season and it’s nice to see him back in his form.”

Suspension, waivers for Jacques

The Ducks career of J.F. Jacques could well be over before it really started. He was hit with a suspension by the NHL on Tuesday — the rest of the preseason and five regular-season games — and then put on waivers Wednesday.

Hello, Syracuse.

He might have ended up in Syracuse anyway, but the suspension, stemming from his actions in the Vancouver game Saturday, probably expedited the process.

Speaking of Syracuse, Finnish goalie Iiro Tarkki was sent to the Ducks’ American Hockey League affiliate earlier Wednesday. Tarkki appeared in two exhibition games.

Ducks enforcer George Parros was not at Wednesday’s game, excused for family reasons.
