Lampley’s HBO status up in the air

Jim Lampley’s status as a boxing announcer for HBO was uncertain Thursday, one day after his arrest on suspicion of felony domestic violence.

An HBO spokesman, calling it a private matter, declined to comment. Lampley’s next assignment for HBO is a Jan. 20 fight in Las Vegas. NBC, which employs Lampley as an Olympic host, also declined to comment.

Lampley, 57, was arrested in Encinitas on Wednesday and booked on investigation of violating a restraining order and dissuading a witness, both misdemeanors, said Mary Helman of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

He was taken to the Vista Detention Facility and released after posting $35,500 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned next week.

Through publicist Howard Bragman, Lampley issued this statement: “I’m innocent of the charge of domestic abuse that has been leveled against me and will vigorously defend myself.... I’m confident I will be found not guilty of this charge. I thank my friends and family for their support ... and ask for understanding and patience from the media until my situation allows me to discuss this in more depth.”

Deputies would say only that there was an altercation this week between Lampley and a 28-year-old woman he has been dating, and that there was a witness.

The woman had obtained a temporary restraining order as a result, and court records identify her as Candice Sanders, a former Miss California USA.

Sanders alleged that Lampley attacked her in her Encinitas apartment on New Year’s Eve. It was at that apartment where Lampley was arrested.
