Drug testing detailed for Mayweather-Mosley fight

Share

Representatives of boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr., Shane Mosley and Golden Boy Promotions on Thursday revealed their anti-doping procedures for their May 1 welterweight title fight in Las Vegas.

The head of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, Travis Tygart, said Mayweather and Mosley will be subjected to random urine and/or blood tests from now “until and after the fight.” In addition to urine tests for steroids, blood tests will be implemented to search for such performance-enhancers as human growth hormone, synthetic hemoglobin and blood transfusions, Tygart said.

A positive test, Tygart said, would leave the boxer suspended from the sport for two years, a condition he said both fighters have agreed to.

Mayweather’s desire for a more stringent testing program than what Nevada offers — random urine testing before and immediately after the bout — contributed to the failed negotiations to stage a fight against Manny Pacquiao earlier this year.

Garrett Willis made the most of a sponsor exemption to his hometown event with five birdies on the back nine for a six-under-par 65 that put him atop the leaderboard after the first round of the Transitions Championship at Palm Harbor, Fla.

Another surprise came from Jeff Maggert.

Maggert was the seventh alternate at one point, and was home in Houston clearing out dead palm trees when he decided Wednesday night he should at least show up at Innisbrook.

Just his luck, Vijay Singh withdrew with a back injury and Maggert shot a 67 and was in the group two shots behind with defending champion Retief Goosen, Jim Furyk, Carl Pettersson, Jonathan Byrd and Rickie Fowler.

The San Francisco 49ers are cutting ties with General Manager Scot McCloughan over a personal matter not related to team issues, AOL Fanhouse reported Thursday. ESPN, citing anonymous sources, reported later that the 49ers are giving McCloughan an extended leave of absence and also referred to him dealing with personal issues.

Calls and an e-mail from the Associated Press to McCloughan’s agent, Peter Schaffer, were not immediately returned Thursday. The 49ers did not return multiple calls or text messages, and e-mails to McCloughan and York weren’t returned.

The 49ers hired McCloughan in February 2005 to supervise their personnel department for Mike Nolan, a career assistant coach who was given total control of the club’s football operations by John York, the brother-in-law of former owner Eddie DeBartolo. McCloughan was named general manager in January 2008 when the 49ers nominally promoted him instead of firing Nolan after the 49ers’ third straight losing season. Nolan lasted just seven more games, with Jed York replacing him with Mike Singletary during the 2008 season.
