Andre Greipel wins Stage 5 of Tour de France
Andre Greipel of Germany won Stage 5 of the Tour de France on Thursday, once again avoiding a late crash for his second straight stage victory.
“Somehow I stayed on my bike,” said Greipel, who finished a split second ahead of Matt Goss of Australia. “It was quite a tough finish there ... and it was also luck on our part to catch the breakaway.”
With about 3 kilometers left, U.S. sprinter Tyler Farrar tumbled in the middle of the pack. But his bike kept going and took down at least two other riders, including Stages 1 and 3 winner Peter Sagan of Slovakia.
After the race, Farrar reportedly stormed into the bus of the Argos-Shimano team, apparently looking for its sprinter, Tom Veelers, and shouting, “You don’t do that to someone!”
Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland retained the yellow jersey for the sixth straight day, followed by Bradley Wiggins, seven seconds behind. Cancellara will wear the yellow jersey for the 27th time in his career, a record for a rider who has never won the Tour.
“When you make history in this kind of way at the Tour, it’s more special,” said Cancellara, a time-trial specialist and the only man in yellow this year after winning Saturday’s prologue.
