Mexico makes it official: Miguel Herrera is the new coach

Mexico’s national soccer federation made it official Friday: Victor Manuel Vucetich is out as coach of the national team and Miguel Herrera is in.

Herrera, the manager of popular Club America in Mexico’s domestic Liga MX, is the fourth national team coach in six weeks. And he might want to think about renting rather than buying since his appointment to the national team is technically just a “loan” from Club America. He’s also been told the job is only guaranteed through Mexico’s two-leg playoff with New Zealand.

Win against New Zealand and Mexico goes to the World Cup. Win impressively and maybe Herrera keeps his job. Either way, the national federation will hold another meeting in December to discuss the future of the national team and its coach.

Vucetich rescued Mexico’s flagging World Cup qualifying campaign, leading El Tri to a 2-1 win over Panama last week, just the team’s second win in the final round of qualifying. And though Mexico lost its final game to Costa Rica, the win over Panama helped it secure a playoff matchup with New Zealand that could earn Mexico a berth in Brazil next summer.

Vucetich was named coach five weeks ago, replacing Luis Fernando Tena, who coached Mexico’s U-23 team to its first Olympic title in 2012.

Tena’s tenure lasted just four days and one game with the federation dismissing him after a 2-0 loss to the U.S. on Sept. 10.
