Angels assistant equipment manager and trivia savant Shane Demmitt won the MLB Network’s “Baseball IQ” game show, defeating New York Mets statistical analyst Ben Baumer in the final round, which aired Thursday night on the network.

By winning the competition, which began with 32 players, including one from each of the 30 major league clubs, Demmitt earned $45,000 for the Angels Baseball Foundation.

Demmitt beat Chuck Morgan, the Texas Rangers senior vice president of ballpark entertainment, in the first round and Tony Blengino, the Seattle Mariners’ special assistant to the general manager in the second round.

He ousted Craig Muder, the National Baseball Hall of Fame communications director, in the quarterfinals and Josh DeFamio, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ supervisor of video graphics, in the semifinals.

The final question in the championship round against Baumer was about pitchers throwing no-hitters in the 21st century.

Several members of the Angels organization watched the final round with Demmitt in a Tempe-area restaurant Thursday night -- the competition was taped in MLB Network’s New Jersey studios in January -- and Demmitt received congratulatory messages from several players on Twitter.
