Adrian Peterson, Vikings star running back, arrested in Houston [updated]

Minnesota All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson was arrested in Houston early Saturday morning on a charge of resisting arrest.

The four-time 1,000-yard rusher, widely considered the best active running back in the NFL, was released from jail after posting a $1,000 bond.

Houston police offered few other details in the case involving Peterson, whose 2011 season was ended on Christmas Eve when he tore both major ligaments in his left knee only 30 yards short of his fifth consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season. He has rushed for 6,752 yards in five seasons.

Peterson, who grew up in Palestine, Texas, was at the dining and entertainment area known as Bayou Place at the time of his arrest, according to the Houston Chronicle.

According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, Peterson was with his girlfriend and family members at a nightclub when police told patrons to leave at closing time. An altercation then began, he reported.

[Updated, 2:30 p.m. July 7: A Houston Police Department spokesman said Peterson pushed an off-duty police officer, who had twice asked Peterson and his party to exit a downtown nighclub, in the shoulder, causing him to stumble.

The spokesman, Kese Smith, said the officer told Peterson he was under arrest and to put his hands behind his back. Peterson pulled away yelling and assumed an aggressive stance, so another off-duty officer came to help. Peterson continued to struggle with the two before he was handcuffed with the help of a third off-duty officer.]

Vikings spokesman Bob Hagan said Saturday that the team was “aware of the situation and are gathering more information.”
