Chivas USA’s Kennedy joins Donovan, Beckham on All-Star team

Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy, who is having a spectacular season for Chivas USA, was named Sunday to Major League Soccer’s roster for next week’s midseason All-Star game against Champions League winner Chelsea at PPL Park outside Philadelphia.

Kennedy’s goals-against average of 1.06 is the second lowest in the league for a regular keeper. He also has five shutouts and hasn’t given up a goal in his last 228 minutes of MLS play.

Kennedy will be joined on the team by Galaxy midfielders David Beckham and Landon Donovan, who are both coming off big efforts in the team’s win Saturday at Portland. Beckham, who became available for the all-star team when he was left off the British squad for the Olympic Games, had two goals in Portland while Donovan scored once.

This marks the third all-star selection for Beckham while Donovan has been chosen an MLS-record 12 times.

Earlier this month the league announced the MLS First XI, as selected in a vote of fans. Coach Ben Olsen ofD.C. United was then asked to construct a balanced game-day roster of players who would be available for the July 25 match with Chelsea. And though all 11 players chosen by the fans also made Olsen’s team, the roster was also supplemented by additions such as Kennedy.

Also on the roster is Kennedy’s former teammate Heath Pearce, who Chivas traded to the New York Red Bulls earlier this season in the deal that brought them striker Juan Agudelo.

The roster:

Goalkeepers: Dan Kennedy (Chivsa USA), Jimmy Nielsen (Sporting Kansas City)

Defenders: Steve Beitashour (San Jose Earthquakes) Aurelien Collin (Sporting Kansas City), Ramiro Corrales (San Jose Earthquakes), Jay DeMerit (Vancouver Whitecaps FC), Heath Pearce (New York Red Bulls), Carlos Valdes (Philadelphia Union)

Midfielders: Osvaldo Alonso (Seattle Sounders FC), David Beckham (Galaxy), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Dwayne De Rosario (D.C. United), Landon Donovan (Galaxy), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

Forwards: Thierry Henry (New York Red Bulls), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders FC), Crhis Pontius (D.C. United), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)
