Josh Brent’s alcohol level after crash reportedly twice legal limit

Dallas Cowboys lineman Josh Brent reportedly had a blood alcohol level that was more than double the legal limit when he crashed his car, killing his teammate Jerry Brown.

Brent, 25, had a blood alcohol level of 0.18, according to the Dallas Morning News, which cited an unnamed law enforcement source. The legal limit is 0.08.

The 321-pound Brent refused a breath alcohol test right after the accident early Saturday. Because there was a fatality, however, police were allowed to draw his blood without his permission.

Brent has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and is free on $500,000 bond.

Police said Brent was speeding Saturday when his car hit a curb and flipped. When police arrived at the scene, Brent was pulling Brown out of his car, which had caught fire. One witness, however, claims that she had to beg Brent to help Brown.

The two men were close friends and were also teammates at the University of Illinois.

Brown was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He died after suffering blunt force trauma to his head and neck, according to the Dallas County medical examiner.

Brent, a third-year tackle, was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list by the Cowboys on Wednesday, which means that his season is over but he’s still on the team.
