UCLA reliever David Berg is a finalist for pitcher of the year

UCLA relief pitcher David Berg has been named one of three finalists for the National Pitcher of the Year award.

Berg, a sophomore, set a school record with 21 saves this season. He is 7-0 with an 0.88 earned-run average, the lowest in the nation.

The Bruins will face another finalist when playing Louisiana State in their College World Series opener at 5 p.m. Sunday. The Tigers will start Aaron Nora, who is 12-0 with a 1.68 ERA. He has 117 strikeouts in 118 innings.

The game will be on ESPN2.

Oklahoma’s Jonathan Gray is the third finalist for the award, which is presented by the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
