Playing Santa Claus to the tune of $4.5 million, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission on Friday announced grants for 163 arts organizations, out of 203 applicants.

They will be paid over two years, in keeping with a policy started last year, when the county decided to double its annual funding of competitive arts grants. An additional 147 groups are in the second year of grants announced last year, bringing the total being helped to 310.

A Quick Takes item in Saturday’s Calendar section about grants announced by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission said that, for the coming two years, the Los Angeles Philharmonic received both the biggest grant -- $254,800 for education and community outreach -- and the highest score, 98, awarded by peer panels in each arts discipline. It also said that among other organizations with budgets of more than $1.5 million, the Museum of Contemporary Art, which received $156,000 for its “First Visit & Beyond” kids’ program, had the second-highest score, 96, tied with the Los Angeles Master Chorale. In fact, those grants were approved in 2006. The highest grant to be announced this year is $293,100 for the Los Angeles Opera, followed by $246,900 for the Center Theatre Group and $233,500 for the American Film Institute. Among the organizations with budgets of more than $1.5 million, the highest scores from peer panels were for Inner-City Arts, 97, Grand Performances, 96, and Los Angeles Opera, 94.

Arts grants: A Quick Takes item in Saturday’s Calendar section about grants announced by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission mistakenly included information about grants that had been approved in 2006. The correct information about this year’s grants is in Calendar today on Page E28.

Because the transition to two-year grants involves a gradual ramping up, grants will total $3.85 million in the current fiscal year, rising to the full $4.5 million in 2008-09.
