Preps ROUNDUP : Lutheran Defeats Baptist

It was a typical night in the life of Janet Ralph.

The LA Lutheran High guard scored 22 points, had 10 steals, 8 assists and 5 rebounds to lead the Lions to a 55-35 win Thursday at LA Baptist High.

The Lions broke to an early 14-4 lead, but by the end of the first quarter the Knights cut the deficit to 14-12.

That was close as Baptist would get. After taking a 29-23 lead at halftime, Lutheran blew the game wide open in the third period, taking advantage of nine turnovers and outscoring the Knights, 12-4.

“We just weren’t ready tonight,” said Baptist Coach Debbie Holliday. “We came out tight at the start of the game and by the time we loosened up, it was too late.”

Dawn Broline had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Knights. She also committed 10 turnovers.

Lutheran is now 3-0 in Alpha league play and 7-1 overall. The Knights drop to 3-1 and 7-4.

Alemany 65, Bell-Jeff 60 Alemany High’s Jenny Beubis sent the game into overtime with a free throw with no time left in regulation, then scored six points in the second overtime period, to keep Alemany unbeaten in the San Fernando Valley League. Alemany’s overall record is 7-5, while Bell-Jeff is 1-1 in the league.

Beubis made the front end of a one-and-one to tie the score at 53. The teams traded baskets in the first overtime before Alemany outscored Bell-Jeff, 10-5, in the second overtime.

Ilene Hauser scored 26 points to raise her career total to 977 points. Bell-Jeff’s Lisa Rodriquez had 18 points.

Corvallis 36, Immaculate Heart 28 Karen Pinto and Nicole Chase scored 10 points each to lead Corvallis to its second San Fernando Valley League win of the season. The team has not lost.

Immaculate Heart is 1-1 in the league. Corvallis is now 6-1 overall.

Good defense by both clubs kept the score low. Corvallis held Immaculate Heart to just four points in the second period while scoring 11 to grab a 18-11 halftime lead.
