Three weeks after Vaughn and Wanda Clausen had arranged a fire information program and evacuation drill for residents of the Acacia Villa senior citizen apartment complex they manage in Garden Grove, a fire broke out in a third-floor unit. City officials recently honored the Clausens, noting that because of their program, no one had been confused, panicked or injured in the real evacuation. Carey L. Marshall has been named manager of the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce. She succeeds Alex Goodman, who retired Tuesday after 8 1/2 years on the job and moved to Palm Desert. Marshall, no relation to Chamber of Commerce President Byron Marshall, moves into her new post Feb. 18. Currently executive vice president-manager of the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce, Marshall also was general manager of the Placer County Chamber near Lake Tahoe and had managed the Healdsburg Chamber in Sonoma County’s wine country before that. California Angel first baseman Rod Carew, one of the all-time premiere hitters in the major leagues, is better known to those in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as a one-man dynamo when it comes to sponsoring Orange County Readathons to raise money to battle the crippling disease. Most recently, Carew hosted a luncheon in El Toro for 16 Orange County school students who had raised the most funds by reading books and acquiring sponsors. The top money raiser was Courtney Larkin of La Habra, a fourth-grader at Las Positas elementary school, who read 48 books and raised $1,257. The busiest reader was Loren Kaiser, a third-grader at the Hebrew Academy in Westminster, who read 178 books and found sponsors for $280. The winner of the “Closest to the Theme” prize in the American Cancer Society’s annual photo contest was Andre Baget of Irvine. The picture depicted a shoe stamping out a burning cigarette to illustrate the theme “Choose Life.” The grand prize went to professional photographer Kip Rano of London and Beverly Hills. Chief Judge Gene Selig of Irvine said the judges were some of Orange County’s best shutter snappers, including Beth Koch, Barry Slobin, Lee Payne, Cindy O’Dell, Rene Laursen and last year’s winner, Carl Lindholm. The winners picked up their prizes during ceremonies at South Coast Plaza.
