Prep Basketball BOYS : Hare’s 19 Points Lead Hart Over San Gabriel

Hart High School opened Foothill League play with a convincing 90-47 victory over visiting San Gabriel Tuesday night. The win improves the Indians’ overall record to 10-4 while the Matadors fell to 2-10.

Hart senior Dirk Hare, 6-2, paced the Indians by scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds. He has been Hart’s team leader most of the season. His game-high total keeps his season average at 19 points per game intact. Hart Coach Doug Michelson used all 12 of his players in uniform and each player scored. Michelson is seeking his second consecutive league championship after recording a perfect 10-0 league record, 19-5 overall, last season.

The Indians dominated San Gabriel from the beginning and continued to devastate the Matadors throughout. San Gabriel did not score a field goal until the last six minutes of the first half. Hart led, 23-2, at the end of the first period and took a 31-point lead into the locker room at halftime.

Canyon 64, Saugus 60 Canyon High School guard Darrin Moloznik’s last-second heroics led the Cowboys to a Golden League victory over Saugus.

Saugus, which hosted the game at College of the Canyons, trailed the Cowboys, 60-58, with 33 seconds left in the game when Moloznik stepped to the line and sank a pair of free throws. With seven seconds left, Moloznik then scored a lay-in to put the game out of the Centurions’ reach.

Moloznik, a junior, led Canyon scoring with 21 points. Teammate Butch Mettinger, a junior forward, contributed 17 points and five rebounds. Mike Harand and Ron Stapp led Saugus with 23 and 22 points, respectively.

The victory improved Canyon’s record to 11-5 for the season and 2-0 in the league. Saugus fell to 0-2 in the league and 7-9 overall. LA Baptist 85, Webb 29 LA Baptist High School thrashed Webb High at home, improving its Alpha League record to 3-1.

Matt Kreiger, a 6-3 senior forward, led the balanced Knight scoring with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Eric Dickson, a 6-2 forward, scored 14 points while Dave Kaak, a 6-1 center, scored 12. Senior guard Gary Kim came off the bench to contribute five points and 10 assists for the Knights. Jesus Calveroni scored 12 points for the Trojans, while Kim Han had 10.

The Knights are now 10-3 for the season. Webb fell to 1-4 in the league and 4-7 overall.

St. Francis 57, St. John Bosco 40 St. Francis took advantage of 59% shooting from the floor and a 36-14 edge on the backboards for a decisive Del Rey League victory over the Braves.

Senior guard Dan Jordan made 10 of 14 shots from the floor to lead all scorers on Bosco’s home court with 22 points. Matt Dyrek, a 6-7 senior center, scored on eight of 11 attempts from the floor for 17 points. He grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Golden Knights on the boards. Mike Ritter led the Braves with 18 points.

St. Francis, which led 40-20 going into the fourth quarter, completed 24 of 41 field goal attempts to improve their lead record to 3-1. They are 7-8 for the season. St. John Bosco is now 0-4 in league play.
