Prep Basketball GIRLS : In First Start, Stevens Scores 18 to Lead Westlake Victory, 59-31

Michelle Stevens scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds in her first start since coming back from a broken hand to lead Westlake High to a 59-31 Marmonte League victory over host Newbury Park Friday night.

Newbury Park was led by junior forward Chris Hagemann, who had 12 points and nine rebounds. It was the Panthers’ first loss in the Marmonte League after three wins. Overall, Newbury Park is 11-3.

The Warriors came out strong after the half to turn a 23-23 tie into 40-29 lead at the end of the third quarter. Westlake is now 3-1 in the league and 6-6 overall.

Kennedy 62, Cleveland 23

Kennedy continued its dominance over Girls Valley 4-A League teams as Stacy Parson and Diane DeCree led the rout over visiting Cleveland.

Parsons, a 5-7 junior guard, scored 22 points, while DeCree, a 6-0 sophomore forward, added 16 points and 17 rebounds. Junior guard Wende Bailey had 10 assists.

The win was Kennedy’s 64th consecutive in the league and improved the Golden Cougars’ record to 4-0 in the league and 11-4 overall. The Cavaliers dropped to 3-1 in league.

El Camino Real 58, Taft 49

Junior center Michelle Kirby scored 26 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked two shots for El Camino Real, which improved its Girls Valley 4-A League record to 3-1. The Conquistadores are 9-2 overall.

Alissa Morton, a 5-10 junior, scored 26 points for Taft, which fell to 0-3 in league.

North Hollywood 42, Palisades 41

Two free throws by Sonja Robertson with eight seconds left in overtime lifted North Hollywood to victory at home. It was the fourth time in five games the Huskies (4-0 in league, 9-0 overall) have overcome a fourth-quarter deficit to win.

Hawthorne finished with 17 points and Robertson had 13.

Stacey Washington, Palisades’ 6-2 junior center, led all scorers with 22 points. She also had 15 rebounds.

Birmingham 40, Sylmar 28

Tenita Bennett scored 14 points, 10 in the second half, and Jeannie Washington scored 12, eight in the second half, to lead Birmingham to a Valley League win.

Sylmar forward Diana Lopez was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points.

Birmingham is 2-2 in league and 4-3 overall. Sylmar fell to 1-3 in the league.

Canoga Park 60, Poly 29

Returning all-leaguers Chris Attanasio and Lori Clemons of Canoga Park High ganged up on visiting Polytechnic as the Hunters ran their Valley League record to 4-0.

Attanasio had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Clemons had 16 points and 14 assists as the defending league champions improved their overall record to 5-3. Julie Burmester also had a strong game for the Hunters, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Granada Hls. 46, San Fernando 36

Granada Hills scored eight unanswered points with four minutes left in the game to pull away from San Fernando and even its Valley 3-A record at 2-2.

Gloria Fahy had 14 points and 13 rebounds, Kristi Barber had 10 points and 13 rebounds and Ann Asaoka had 10 points for the Highlanders, who improved their overall record to 2-9. San Fernando dropped to 0-4 in league.

Van Nuys 43, Reseda 25

Van Nuys stayed undefeated in four games in the Valley 3-A League as Brigitt Montes scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. She got help from Shawn Price, who scored 10 points and had 21 rebounds.

The Regents, 6-2 overall, blew a close game wide open by outscoring Reseda 20-5 in the second quarter. Reseda is 3-1 in league, 8-3 overall.

Hoover 49, Pasadena 44

Freshman center Rose Conner led a balanced Hoover scoring attack with 14 points as the Tornados improved their Pacific League record to 2-1 at home.

Hoover, which is 9-4 overall, also got 12 points and 13 rebounds from junior guard Silvia Antanaitis, and 11 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals from senior guard Jena Nerlich.

Glendale 52, Crescenta Valley 41

Glendale set up an early Pacific League showdown with Muir, running its record to 3-0 as Erin Cassidy scored 16 points and grabbed 20 rebounds and center Marth Rankin scored 14 points and grabbed 19 rebounds.

The Nitros improved their league record to 3-0, 8-7 overall, with the win. Muir, which hosts Glendale Thursday, is also 3-0.

Crescenta Valley (0-3 in league, 5-6 overall) was led by 6-1 sophomore center Molly Wampler, a transfer from Glendale. Wampler scored 23 points, but only two in the fourth quarter.

Buckley 60, Providence 32

Buckley improved its Delphic League record to 4-1 behind the play of Tara Mody and Ariana Lallone.

Mody led all scorers with 21, while Lallone has 14 and tied a school record with 30 rebounds. Ann Marie Hamilton scored 10 points off the bench for the Griffins who are now 7-5 overall.

Providence fell to 0-3 in league.

Oakwood 56, Oak Hill 10

Karen Wexler, Rhonda Long, Colleen Donahue and Lisa Fragner scored eight points apiece for Oakwood High, which led 32-4 at the half. Donahue added six assists.

The Gorillas are 3-0 in Liberty League action and 7-1 on the year.

Palmdale 71, Saugus 49

Linda Staley and Karen Haggerty combined for 43 points as Palmdale improved its Golden League record to 3-0. It is 15-2 overall.

Saugus (1-2 in league, 3-8 overall) was led by in scoring by Holly Ingersoll’s 18 points. Patti Miller had 16 and Shari Farkas added 10.

W. Vly. Chr. 30, W. Simi Chr. 18

Trinette Waters scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as West Valley Christian came back from a 14-6 halftime deficit to win going away.

The Seekers are 2-0 in the Christian Schools Athletic Conference, 5-0 overall.

West Simi Christian, which was led by Donnel Johnston’s 14 points, fell to 1-1 in league.

Simi Vly. 54, Channel Islands 22

Wendy Morgan scored 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds--and Julie Arlott scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds--to lead Simi Valley to its third Marmonte League victory without a loss.

Simi Valley has won six in a row and improved its overall record to 11-3. Channel Islands is 0-3 in league and 0-8 overall.
