Prep Basketball GIRLS : North Hollywood Stays Unbeaten, 53-52

North Hollywood High’s Denise Hammond converted a three-point play with six seconds left to lift the Huskies over Birmingham, 53-52, Tuesday night and keep their unbeaten record intact.

North Hollywood has been a comeback team all season. Tuesday night was no exception.

The Huskies blew an 11-point lead in fourth quarter after two of their players had fouled out.

North Hollywood, which is 7-0 in the Valley 3-A League and 12-0 overall, was led by Sonja Robertson, who scored 15 before fouling out early in the fourth quarter. Hammond had 14 points.

The Braves, who are 3-4 in the league, were led by Jeanne Washington’s 20 points.

Louisville 93, St. Genevieve 38

With sophomore center Andrea Knapp scoring 22 points and guards Karen Secky and Marianella Cruz getting 18 points each, first-place Louisville was able to rack up its season-high point total and stay one game ahead of Alemany in the San Fernando Valley league.

Sophomore guard Barbara Terhar added 13 points off the bench for the Royals, who improved their league record to 8-0.

For St. Genevieve, Erica Smith tossed in 14 points.

Louisville worked its press defense to perfection in the first quarter as it built a 27-5 lead off numerous Valiant turnovers. Knapp did most of the damage for Louisville, scoring 14 points in the quarter.

Alemany 74, Immac. Heart 31

Ilene Hauser scored a game-high 29 points and had 11 assists as Alemany improved its record to 8-1 and stayed one game behind first-place Louisville in the San Fernando Valley League.

Jenny Beubis scored 12 points and had 9 rebounds for Alemany, which opened a 37-22 halftime lead. Alemany, with all nine Indian Maidens scoring, then outscored the Pandas, 37-18, in the second half to pull away for the lopsided victory.

Linda Pang scored nine points for Immaculate Heart, which dropped to 1-7 in league.

Chaminade 40, Bell-Jeff 35

Chaminade, behind the play of Daiva Tomkus and Melissa Ingells, outscored the Guards, 13-10, in the final quarter to win their fifth league game and tie Bell-Jeff for fourth place in the San Fernando Valley League.

The Guards jumped out to an 8-5 lead going into the second quarter, but the Eagles outscored them, 16-8, and led 21-16 at halftime. Bell-Jeff battled back to within two points at the end of three quarters, but Chaminade steadily outscored them in the final period.

Tomkus led the Eagles with a game-high 17 points and Ingells added 14 points for Chaminade, which improved its record to 5-4. Valerie Keeling tossed in 16 points for Bell-Jeff, which dropped to 5-3 in league.

W. Simi Chr. 21, Pilgrim 19

West Simi Christian got eight points from Donnell Johnston and five points from Denise Teegen to defeat host Pilgrim. West Simi is 8-2.

Debbie Honda had 10 points for Pilgrim, while Ngozi Ogbunamiri finished with nine points.

Faith Baptist 36, Campbell Hall 32

After trailing, 10-3, at the end of the first quarter, Faith Baptist came back to defeat Campbell Hall for its third Delphic League win. It has lost twice.

Faith Baptist outscored the Vikings, 16-3, in the second quarter to take a 19-13 lead. After a seesaw third quarter, the score was tied at 22.

Faith Baptist is 7-4 overall, while Campbell Hall is winless in six league games.

Brentwood 32, Buckley 23

Buckley scored just nine points in the second half and lost to host Brentwood in a Delphic League game. The Griffins, 4-2 in league and 8-6 overall, trailed, 19-14, after the first two quarters. They made just 3 shots in the final 16 minutes.

Buckley center Ariana Lallone grabbed 26 rebounds and blocked 5 shots. But she made just 3 of 11 shots and finished with 7 points.

Notre Dame 46, Corvallis 40

Notre Dame, which led from start to finish, got 20 points from Kristen Borella and 15 points from Jodi Nix as it upset Corvallis in a San Fernando Valley League game.

The Lady Knights took a 33-23 lead going into the fourth quarter after allowing the Scotties just seven points in the third quarter. Nix scored 12 of her points on 6 steals she turned into layups.

Only four of Corvallis’ nine players scored, but Karen Pinto led the team with 16 points as the Scotties’ record drops to 4-5 in league.

Notre Dame is now 2-7 in league and 3-11 overall.

Van Nuys 65, San Fernando 44

Despite a 33-point performance by Ruthie Fiero, San Fernando couldn’t stop Van Nuys as the first-place Wolves led the entire game and improved their Valley 3-A League record to 7-0.

Center Shawn Price led Van Nuys with 18 points and 22 rebounds, while forward Charnessa Holmes tossed in 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Brigette Montes, who also had 10 rebounds, and Bernadette Tellis both added 13 points for the Wolves.

Leading 29-21 at halftime, Van Nuys held the Tigers to eight points in the third quarter and took a commanding 48-29 lead.

San Fernando dropped to 1-6 in the league and 3-8 overall.
