Chaminade High Coach Mike Valentine called it “the biggest upset of the season.”

His Eagles, led by Darva Tomkins, jumped out to a 10-7 first quarter lead and and hung on to defeat the previously unbeaten Louisville High School girls, 41-36, Thursday night at Chaminade.

Tomkins, a junior center, scored 18 points and had 21 rebounds, both game-high totals. Mellisa Ingalls scored 12 points for the Eagles. Louisville was led by Andrea Knapp, who had 14 points, and Lynn Flanagan with nine.

Louisville, ranked No. 7 in the Southern Section 3-A poll, trailed, 28-21, going into the fourth quarter and rallied late, scoring 14 points in the final period. But it came up short.

Alemany 56, Bell-Jeff 42

Alemany High moved into first place in the San Fernando Valley League with a come-from-behind victory over Bell-Jeff. The win gives the Indian Maidens a 9-1 record and 12-6 overall while Bell-Jeff is 5-4 and 11-6 respectively.

“We started dominating the boards in the third period,” Alemany Coach Nancy Graziano said. “Jenny Beubis hit some good outside shots there and Jennifer Kroll started getting the rebounds in the fourth period.”

Graziano’s team has shared the league title with Louisville the last two year and looks forward to a rematch with Louisville Feb. 14. Alemany lost to Louisville, 59-58, in the first meeting.
