Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates said he will not campaign for the June ballot measure to add 1,000 police officers. Gates, speaking on KNBC-TV, said that if he supported the so-called “1,000 plan” now, it could be construed that he favors Mayor Tom Bradley in his reelection bid against City Councilman John Ferraro. Bradley backs the plan to pay for additional officers through increased taxes, while Ferraro has proposed cutting back expenditures on most city agencies and eliminating the Board of Public Works to raise funds for the additional officers. Gates told reporters later he would “come out swinging” for the plan he favors after the election.
